PANIC - A Malaysian Japanese Collaboration
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 November, 2018 - Malaysia’s Onz Production and Japan’s Theatre Moments is collaborating to bring PANIC to the Malaysian stage. An adaptation of a short story by Japanese novelist and dramatist Kōbō Abe, PANIC will be happening from 5-9 December, 8.30pm (with additional matinee shows at 3pm during the weekend), at Kepong Facthree Event Arts Space (FAC3).
PANIC revolves around a man who wakes up next to a dead body after his employment exam for a company. To avoid being associated with a possible murder case, he kept it a secret. His life begins to unravel - he starts by leaving material possessions such as his house, eventually abandoning his conscience and values altogether.
Featuring a multiracial cast, the play will be performed in four languages - Cantonese, Japanese, Malay and English in an effort to showcase Malaysian diversity and foster cultural exchange. It is also an attempt to highlight our similarities and show how we are all interconnected and affected by the world we live in. The dialogue will be supplemented by English and Chinese subtitles to help audience members keep up with the performance.
Despite the mixed dialogue and potential language barrier, it is possible for the audience to derive enough meanings from the actors' physical expression alone and follow the story development accordingly.
Another unique aspect of PANIC would be their minimalistic approach from costumes to props for the entire production. Aside from a trolley, props such as mobile phones, beers, and hair dryers will be replaced by toilet paper. The use of toilet paper in place of regular props is an important signifier that at the end of the day, all of these possessions are meaningless.
Tickets are priced at RM120 per entry, with a special promotional price of RM60 per ticket for opening night. Block bookings are also available with a minimum purchase of 20 tickets, at RM80 per ticket.
