What do we think about 'sex education'?

Writer: Alexandria ChewAlexandria Chew

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5th - The discussion about sex education has intensified on social media.

Many chimed in on their opinions about implementing sex education after the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dr. Wan Azizah launched a video about sex education for children through Youtube to reduce crimes against minors on the 25th of June as reported by Bernama radio.

This move was well-received by the users of Twitter, with one netizen congratulating the ministry for initiating an important step.

Another applauds the ministry for acting fast to address the issue instead of playing the waiting game.

Amongst the government personnel in support of implementing sex education are the Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh and Member of Parliament for Kulai, Johor, Teo Nie Ching.

Accompanying the tweet was an article from The Star regarding her statement about treating physical and health education (PJPK) classes as important as academic classes, such as English and Maths at SJKT Subramaniye Barathee in Gelugor, Penang.

She explained that the subject is crucial because it contains elements of safety, health and educates students on how to identify inappropriate touches.

She said there is a need to correct the misconception that sex education was teaching children about sex when the subject also teaches them how to protect themselves.

A netizen tweeted in support of sex education, citing that she wasn’t aware of the sexual assault by her teacher.

Another netizen vocalised how the sex education syllabus should be updated as there are medications in the market absent in the textbooks.

Many also weighed in about the abstinence-focused syllabus taught in government schools, citing that it is unproductive because it doesn’t cover all of the risks when someone decides to engage in a sexual interaction.

Although the discourse is rife online, the content included in the sex education set to be implemented has yet to be discussed by the ministers.
